Our guest blogger is Jennifer Addison, national security team intern at the Center for American Progress. Dozens of Israeli women bared it all this week in homage to Egyptian activist Aliaa Elmahdy and her controversial naked photos, the latest in a string of efforts from women in the Middle East to reclaim their sexuality. Last week, Elmahdy posted nude photos of herself on the internet in an attempt to send a message about sexual equality and expression in Egypt.
She says she's upholding the spirit of the revolution, but in addition to conservative Islamists, she's angered liberals who believe the scandal will hurt them during the country's parliamentary election next week, the first since President Hosni Mubarak was ousted. In Egypt most Muslim women wear veils, and even if they don't, it's rare to see uncovered arms and legs in public. When she published her nude photo init was difficult to do justice to Elmahdy because no one knew what she stood for. Today, it is difficult to do justice to her because she seems to stand for so many different things: for gays, for hatred of Islam, for the right to free expression, but also against the right to free exercise of religion. She seems to have lost her way in the clash between cultures.
In a naked display of solidarity, 40 Israeli women recently took off their clothes to support an embattled young Egyptian woman who is under fire for posting a nude photograph of herself online. The Egyptian woman, Aliaa Magda Elmahdy, 20, posted the picture and allowed it to be put on Twitter in order to protest sexism and the oppression of women in Egypt. She told CNN that she did it because:. In Egypt, conservatives and Islamists demonized her, and the left disowned her, stating emphatically that she has no connection to the liberation movement responsible for the overthrowing of Mubarak.
